Spanish is offered in the form of a core-elective pairing meaning some students study it as a value-added subject and others have it as part of their core curriculum.

The Centre also engages in organizing cultural activities like film festivals, street shows, exhibition, poetry recitation, dance and music festivals wherein students are encouraged to participate. These activities aim at constructive engagement of students in cross-cultural communication and develop a wider outlook towards different cultures. The Centre aims to create a space that is plurilingual and multicultural.

Scope

  • Better opportunities for higher studies

The growing Interdisciplinarity among contemporary academic disciplines demands learning a foreign language indispensable and significant at the same time. Disciplines like Media & Communication, International Affairs, Cultural Studies, Liberal Arts and Humanities, Business Management, Law and Policy, Marketing, etc. could do justice to their objective and increase their scope only if the language of the region under study is known.

  • Better job opportunities

Giant multinational companies very often advertise for positions for people having knowledge of one or more foreign languages; many Indian pharmaceutical companies who have their branches in many parts of the work also look out for people who are bilingual.

Apart from these full-time openings, there is an increasing demand of translators and interpreters at various ministries in India, at international organizations, think tanks and embassies. In an increasingly globalized world, for greater cultural diplomacy and knowledge exchange being a multilingual gives you enhanced career opportunities.

  • Better social and cognitive skills

Apart from strong career prospects, studies have proved that learning a foreign language improves cognitive skills of the learner. Not only does learning a language improve memory, but it promotes tolerance through cultural appreciation. Apart from enhancing communication skills, it also promotes creativity among learners.

Pedagogy

The Centre is well equipped with resources and infrastructure like multi-media lab that enhance and make classroom conducive for learning a foreign language. The approach followed helps learners acquire languages in a leaner friendly atmosphere. Learning happens through engaging students in creative and communicative task-based activities. Equal importance is given to all the four communicative skills, i.e. reading, listening, writing and speaking. Various teaching approaches are applied as per the needs of the learners. Students are encouraged to become autonomous and reflect over their own learning strategies. A lot of importance is laid upon the authenticity of communication. Learners get an opportunity of interacting with the people of the target language countries through online chat sessions. The students are informed about the history and culture of the various target languages that they learn. The Centre currently also organizes immersion trips in the summer and winter break to Spain.

International Collaborations

The Centre has been instrumental in contributing to the already wide global network of the O.P. Jindal Global University. In the year 2016, an MoU was signed with the Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the University of Granada, Spain. Ever since, students learning Spanish get a chance to visit Spain and to learn about its culture and history. JGU students even get an opportunity of attending Business and Economics courses in Spanish. There is also an ongoing project of mutual cooperation in the field of teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language among the faculty of both the universities.
