Global Library

The University’s Global Library functions as hub for supporting academic scholarship and the research needs of our community. Situated over an area of over 2,682 square meters, the library houses a large number of print and non-print resources. The print section houses around 48,000 titles, including reference books; the non-print section comprises over 700 CDs/DVDs. The library also provides access to a large number of e-resources including databases, e-journals, and other online material, including 12,031 e-journals and subscriptionbased access rights to 1,65,000 e-books. The library also provides links to millions of public domain e-books through the library website. All subscribed e-resources can be accessed via links provided on the library website, where information on access policy and search aids are also provided.

Most online resources are available for unlimited downloads throughout the university campus (subject to copyright regulations and University policy). In addition, as a result of JGU’s participation in resource sharing networks such as the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) and the Developing Library Network (DELNET), users can request interlibrary loan services from over 5,000 libraries across the country. As part of our effort to integrate technology into our everyday operations, all library functions are completely automated using an integrated library management system called KOHA, a web-based integrated library system, which also provides public online access to the library catalogue and e-resources. Circulation services are self-operated using RFID-based self-check in/checkout kiosks and smart cards.

Computers and self- and staff-operated printers are available for general access. Virtual Private Network (VPN) access ensures remote, off-campus access to e-resources. Student and staff enquiries can be addressed through email or telephone, with one dedicated staff each to respond to referencing enquiries for the law school, and the remaining four schools. An extensive list of information relating to newly procured publications, journals and e-resources, research guides, book reviews, events, and articles, and updates on library services and infrastructure are shared with staff and students through email, notice  boards, the library website and its Facebook page.

Students are also provided opportunities to participate    in library research and related projects. The main library has a seating capacity of 270 at any time and is open till midnight on regular weekdays, with the Global Reading Room, access to e-resources, and reprographic services open 24 hours on all days. The layout of the library is carefully designed to provide shelf guides, individual reading carrels, lounge areas for browsing and relaxed reading, an IT zone for   accessing e-resources, and access for differently abled users, including audio books, and large print material for visually challenged users. Students with learning disabilities are supported through technological aids in the library. In current progress is the creation of spaces for break-out and discussions to enable increased collaborative work among students and staff.

To optimize the use of library resources, IT literacy trainings and other relevant workshops are organized by the library on a monthly and annual basis. In order to maintain and enhance the quality of our services, the University has a Library Advisory Committee comprising library and academic staff that advises on library policies, reviews users’ feedback and recommends action on issues related to infrastructure, collections and services.
